Keeping Healthy Whilst Travelling
I’ve been back from my holiday just over a week now, so I thought it would be fitting to write a blog about Keeping Healthy Whilst Travelling. Some people think I might be crazy for exercising on holidays but exercising is something I LOVE and I think I would go crazy if I didn’t! Being active is such a big part of my life and I’m most happy when I have exercised… and eaten. So here are my top tips on keeping healthy whilst travelling.
Keep a water bottle with you at all times!Firstly, it’s incredibly important to stay hydrated. Secondly, many of us at times confuse the feeling of thirst with hunger. By staying regularly hydrated we decrease our chances of over-eating and under-drinking.
Take the footpath! That museum you want to go see is only a couple of blocks away? Ditch the cab, save some money and enjoy the walk. There is nothing like incidental exercise to keep the body fit, and you never know what or who you might discover along the way!
Don’t be afraid to indulge!Travelling to Italy? How can you say no to a gelato a day? It’s ok to indulge every now and again. By indulging every now and again, we lower our chance for serious cravings. These often lead to binging and consequently, the feeling of guilt. You’re on holidays, there is not time to feel guilty. Remember it’s all about what you do MOST of the time!
Workout in your hotel room!If your hotel doesn’t have a gym or fitness centre, that’s ok because there are SO many exercises that don’t require much space and can be done in your hotel room. Think burpees, pushups, situps, etc!
Skip!My favourite item to take travelling with me is my skipping rope. It’s light so it isn’t going to add to your luggage weight limit, it’s easy to store so won’t take up much space in your suitcase, and you can use it practically anywhere. Even in your hotel room. All it takes is 5 minutes of skipping to work up a sweat.
Try the local fruits and vegetables! As long as it is safe, embrace the local fresh fruit and vegetables.
Travel with healthy snacks!Depending on where you are travelling to and customs, pack a range of portable healthy snacks such as muesli bars. Check out my snack ideas for the plane.
Get outside and get adventurous!Research or ask a local if there are any bike tours, bush walks or mountain hikes nearby. The views from the top are usually worth the walk and make for some great holiday photos.
